Consultation is often a key step in determining the nature of psychological services most adequate to a client. During a consultation, the psychologist will inquire about the goals and needs of the client with regards to psychological services. Relevant questions about the client’s past and current functioning are often included in this process. Additionally, the psychologist might ask that the client brings certain documents to the consultation session (e.g., IEPs, court orders, prior psychological evaluations, medical records etc.). The outcome of a successful consultation is often a list of recommendations based on the client’s goals and the information offered to the psychologist.
